During the early 1900s “Black Wallstreet” was the name suitably given to one of the most prosperous black communities in America located in the Greenwood district of northern Tulsa, Oklahoma.
It demonstrated that African Americans had a flourishing infrastructure with Ph. D’s, doctors, attorneys, realtors and other professionals, as well as its very own transportation bus system. It was an era when medical schools were owned by physicians, students went to school suited because of the principles they were taught, and while the entire state of Oklahoma had two airports, six African Americans owned their own planes.
It was an neighborhood which included over 600 businesses, ranging from restaurants, grocery stores, movie theaters, hospitals, banks, post offices, libraries, schools, and law offices to name a few. It was truly golden era, which boomed until its untimely demise in June of 1921, due to one of the most devastating race riots in history. This was Black Wallstreet.
On November 26th we honor young socialites whom aspire to rekindle the spirit of Black Wallstreet and uphold its legacy with a remarkable charitable event. Let us come together on Black Friday for a philanthropic night of food, dancing, casino style gambling, and pay tribute to this golden moment in time in similar fashion at The Patterson Creative Alliance Center.
